Thanksgiving in Spain

My favorite holiday of the year was last week.  I spent it in class and later teaching some youngsters about it instead of in my eatin’ pants with my family, watching a parade and enjoying the best foods.  It’s times like these I have to remind myself – at least I’m in Spain.

Our program coordinators made a very sad attempt at Thanksgiving for us.  The food was all a mystery and wasn’t worth eating.  I didn’t think it’d be that hard to find some turkey, apple, and pumpkin things around town.  I don’t know how they missed the mark so much.  See for yourself.

Thanksgiving 2011.

However….it’s the thought that counts.  Luckily I spent the night with good friends, and proceeded to spend the weekend in Portugal.  Life isn’t too shabby after all.

Barcelona, Take Two.

Because going once this semester wasn’t enough.  Momma and I went on up to Barcelona for her second and final weekend visiting me.  I had gone in October and was less than impressed.  This trip was way better and helped me appreciate and enjoy the city a bunch more.

Highlights:

Sagrada Familia, yet again.  Some outright spectacular Gaudi architecture, still in progress.

Barcelona’s bus tour is much more convenient and advanced than Prague’s and we explored all over with the big red bus.  The architecture doesn’t cease to amaze me, and the lack of Spanish doesn’t cease to disappoint me.  That’s Barcelona for you!

We happened to be in town the weekend of the election (yes, the election was on a Sunday).  There weren’t any protests or rallies this time around, but there were people camped out in Plaza Catalunya with signs.  They weren’t speaking or moving – just kind of there.  There were all kinds of propaganda, which always interests me.

The political/voting dynamic is very interesting here.  There are some people who strictly vote for the same party regardless of the candidate or platform.  There are others who are educated what’s happening, and when they disagree, they don’t vote at all.  Then there are the sane people who make an actual decision.  Oh so interesting.

Anyway, it was another fabulous weekend with Mommy (for more details, ask her for first impressions).

(A few more for your viewing pleasure):

Mom meets Madrid.

Although Mom was on vacation while visiting me, I was only pretending to be.  I went to class everyday, but that became even more of a chore than normal.  Some quality best friend time, relaxation, and top-notch food made the week speed by.
